Our May 14th speaker will be LLNL retiree, Joe Wong. Joe has recently traveled to Patagonia and previously to Antarctica. Joe will share with us his exciting adventures around the rugged yet beautiful southernmost parts of the Americas.
Dr Wong came to the Lab in 1986 as a Senior Chemist and Group Leader within Chemistry and Materials Science. Joe's research interests at the lab covered a broad spectrum including spectroscopy using Synchrotron radiation, chemical dynamics, high temperature metallurgy, damage in NIF fused silica optics, catching phonons in plutonium and many other challenging topics. Just before retiring, Joe was honored as a Fellow of the American Physical Society- a highly prestigious award.
Joe retired in 2006 and has dedicated this time to family and travel. Joe earned a B.S. in Pure & Applied Chemistry at the Univ. of Tasmania, Tasmania, Australia in 1965, followed by a BS in Physical Chemistry at the same in 1966. Joe then earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Purdue University in 1970.
About LLRA
The Livermore Lab Retirees Association (LLRA) is an organization for retired employees and spouses of retirees of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. LLRA is open to retirees from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, whether they are members of CalPERS, UCRS or the private retirement system of the LLC.
We generally have monthly luncheon meetings January through November where invited speakers cover topics from science at the Lab to community topics.
LLRA is a member of the The Council of University of California Retiree Associations (CUCRA), a consortium of the Retiree Associations of nine University of California campuses: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz; the three UC-managed National Laboratories: Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, and Los Alamos; and the Office of the President/Regents.
